I heart NY

Small Business Marketing

Ya, everyone knows it. Everyone has seen it. But did you know it started as a bumper sticker. It was a marketing tactic to get people to visit the city and increase tourism.

Now I’m sure they wish tourists would leave. LOL. But this is a very good marketing tactic for local businesses to make their mark in their city. This will of course only work if you have a recognizable logo (and people wouldn’t be embarrassed by it) and give the stickers away free. We have a dealer here in town that put their window tinting decal on all of their customers cars. It’s just standard and expected. He has positioned himself as the go to guy for window tinting cars. If your business can benefit from this, you might want to consider doing this. It isn’t for every type of business or city, but it is worth looking into.

Hiring illegals and how this can kill your business

How does 5 years in the pokey and a $10,000 fine for each illegal you hire sound? I really should even have to write any more than this to explain how stupid it is. I’m all for helping the less fortunate, but not at the risk of going to jail and losing my business. If you want to help a certain immigration cause, don’t do it with your business. Do it outside of work. There is just to much to risk. And for those that see this as a way to get cheap labor and make a little extra money, you shouldn’t even be in business. There are plenty of people that are down on their luck or just getting out of college that could use a break. Hire them, train them, invest some effort with these and you might find a long term employee that could take your business to a different level.

Funding your startup

If you are ready to start a new business venture but you don’t have any or all of the funds to do it. Maybe you should start a business then eh? Well, there are ways around this TINY little problem.

Here are 10 places to find some cash.

1. Bring in a full partner (not family)

2. Bring in a silent partner (no control, just funds for profit)

3. Government Grants (takes at least 6 months

4. Small Business Loans (better have good credit)

5. Ask your family for a loan (my advice is don’t do it)

6. Home equity line of credit (works like a credit card, secured by your house)

7. Second Mortgage (only if over $20,000 and you don’t mind losing your house)

8. Personal Savings (I think the best way)

9. Cash in your investments (you aren’t quitting your investments, you are finding a new vehicle for them)

10. Sell as many assets as you can and replace them with shiny new ones when you make it big.
